If you’re not, probably boring. Page by page, Derman details his adventures in this field-analyzing the incompatible personas of traders and quants, and discussing the dissimilar nature of knowledge in physics and finance.

He also talks about his life as a graduate student in a department which was not well managed nor jy with its students’ career development, qunat all too common. He moved on to a higher paying but creatively stifling corporate job at Bell Labs where, though you had a doctorate, your supervisor might only have a masters degreewhere he often felt subservient and demeaned.

Lists with This Book. Who should read this book? He worked at Goldman from until except for one year at Salomon Brothers. The book also attempts to answer the questions, who is a quant and what does a quant do. The book surpassed my expectations.

Graduate school was a small community. His book elaborates on these ideas with examples from the theories of physics and philosophy, and the models of finance. Mostly this was about trying to buy low and sell high and is more gamesmanship than mathematics, although they needed mathematics in the early days to set the trading book up nowadays this is not a requirement as systems are better.
